We want you to feel at home, as it has been a wonderful home to us for many years.

We, the fourth generation of hoteliers, welcome you.

From father to daughter, daughter to children and now father and sons, each generation has developed the business with their family as they too have grown at the hotel. The stories are many and we encourage you to fully immerse yourself in centuries old rural country life. By employing and working with local staff, artisans, farmers and suppliers we make full use of all produce, and work to minimise our impact on planet earth wherever possible. Here are a few of the smaller yet impactful details we have been working towards to protect the environment.

Originally, the site of a mill and a farm it was around 1850 that the main house Maison Carrée was built.

The mill was then transformed into a gallic acid plant with a very tall and impressive chimney (no longer standing today). The latter allowed the extraction of gallic acid obtained after burning green chestnut trees. At the time, gallic acid was used for the treatment of skins for tanneries of Annonay, a prosperous industry with more than 3000 employees. Later, this gave way to a water mill and then to an electric sawmill.

It was between 1908 to 1920 that our park was laid out along the river Malpertuis. We recommend that you walk there to discover a wide variety of trees such as Catalpas, Sequoias, Ginkgo Bilobas, Araucarias, Maples of Japan and many more.

In 1970 the sawmill activity gave way to the hotel business, which our family still runs today.

In 50 years the old buildings have been renovated and new buildings have emerged. The result is a hotel where every building, renovated or new, has a particular feel, combining the best of modern style, simplicity and refined taste.

In 2020 son no.4 joined his father and brother with the aim of sharing with others what he missed the most whilst living in the sprawling cities of Paris, London and New York, his connection to nature and the countryside. As a triathlete when training, he was always eager to get back “home” to run, swim and cycle in the clean pure air. We promise you can feel the difference.

He knew travel centred on sustainability and the experience of relaxation and well-being for all, was on the horizon. A practice La Gentilhommière has been doing for generations, but now was the time to communicate this.

It is only natural that in our growth we repurpose and repair where we can. Take our conference chairs for instance, direct from the interior trending 1970’s, comfortable, sturdy and practical. Why throw them away for replicas? With some local magic we now have over 200 uniquely designed and upholstered chairs to keep you comfortable and alert.
